The Tate Modern – Rupert Bellamy

Protecting the Entrance and the Public

Introduction

Protecting the public is an essential requirement when working on a chimney 99m above ground. This is even more important when you are the Tate Gallery, who welcome up to five million visitors a year. AGS Scaffolding were commissioned to facilitate these safeguards by scaffolding and hoarding around the entrances to the gallery whilst some enabling works were being carried out to the chimney above

Project

As an initial part of the Gallery’s £215m expansion plans, AGS worked with the Tate to provide a functional and aesthetically pleasing structure to focus the visitor’s eye on the entrance, whilst affording them all the protection that would be required whilst the chimney works were taking place above. Eventually the new development will integrate the new with the existing building and contribute to the local environment by opening up a new North/South route from the Millennium Bridge through the building to Southwark.

Solution

AGS constructed and designed a scaffolding backbone before facing the framework with battening and 18mm waterproof WBP plywood to give a flat, simple, engineered and extremely robust structure. The external face was finally painted and with all the graphics applied, the hoarding and the securing scaffold looked every bit the part whilst camouflaging it’s true purpose.

Conclusion

AGS are pleased to have been a part of this scheme and look forward to having a role in the major expansion plans of such an iconic institution

Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate said: “We are delighted that Herzog & de Meuron’s revised plans have been granted approval by Southwark Council. We look forward to creating one of the most exciting cultural buildings in Europe which will bring direct benefits to Southwark and London as a whole.”

The Monument – City of London Cooperation

A Very Different Hoarding

Introduction

The Monument, one of the City of London’s most outstanding landmarks and visitor attractions, closed on 30 July 2007 for a substantial programme of improvements and repairs. The project, funded by the City of London Corporation, involved the cleaning and repair of Sir Christopher Wren’s Monument’s stonework and the re-gilding of it’s famous golden orb. The flame-topped Monument to the Great Fire of 1666 is the tallest isolated stone column in the world. Completed in 1677, The Monument stands 202 ft high and is positioned 202 ft from the spot in Pudding Lane on which the Great Fire is believed to have started. Every year, over 100,000 visitors climb the 311 spiral steps to the Monument’s observation gallery to enjoy unique and exhilarating views across the Capital.

Project

In order to protect the Monument and to provide both working space and a storage area whilst the renovations were carried out a completely freestanding hoarding needed to be erected. The requirement was for a structure that was not fixed to anything at all, other than itself. The hoarding had to fill the roles of being substantial, safe, secure and remain in place for up to 18 months

Solution

The Monument project started by AGS understanding exactly what their client required and developing a workable scheme to include all of their needs. Working with Cathedral Works, AGS designed a simple structure that was solid and substantial enough; to give an enclosure for the renovation works to take place within, that protected the existing York Stone Paving and Street Furniture while it offered complete protection to the public and was visibly appealing.

Conclusion

AGS were delighted to be offered this opportunity to develop a straightforward and effective method of providing a hoarding to such a prestigious renovation project. As can be seen from the photographs there was nothing complicated about the finished hoarding, it performed as designed and expected. Even when it was cleared away no one would ever have known that such a sturdy structure had been there. Simply, it worked.

“AGS did a great job, in fact probably more than was required including coming up with the idea of using the barrels filled with sand and water as a kentledge” Gary Collings, Site Manager, Cathedral Works Organisation

Hythe Imperial Hotel,Kent – GSE Group

Hoarding for the Developer

-Introduction

The 100 year old Hythe Imperial Hotel and Spa is a 4 star hotel, with spectacular views over the English Channel. The hotel is in close proximity to the Channel Tunnel and ferry port at Dover. The hotel has 100 modern guest rooms, the Imperial restaurant serves award-wining cuisine, and the Martello bar is an elegant spot for coffee or cocktails. Facilities include a health spa, indoor heated pools and an impressive 18 hole lynx golf course.

Project

The Hythe Imperial hotel was purchased by the GSE Group in 2007 with a view to restoring the venue back to its former status as a major destination hotel. The hotel itself is currently being refurbished and extended to create additional accommodation and an area of development land currently has planning permission for the construction of 72 properties. AGS were contracted to design and install perimeter hoarding as well as access gates for pedestrians and vehicles in relation to the new build activities.

Solution

AGS initially designed the hoarding to ensure stability and suitability for purpose. Hoarding lineswere set and a 1.5t excavator fitted with an earth boring auger was utilised for excavating the 250 post and raker holes required to erect the 650mL of 2.400m high hardwood ply hoarding. Additionally 2 sets of 6.000m wide steel vehicle access gates along with 1.000m wide steel pedestrian access gates were manufactured and installed to ensure traffic and pedestrian management was achieved for the new build activities.

Conclusion

AGS were delighted to win this tender and work on such a prestigious landmark hotel. AGS look forward to tendering the new works package in relation to domestic fencing for the newly built properties.
